• 1726 – 1777 Hugh Mercer (1726-1777) Died 12 January 1777, aged 50 Scottish-born physician who became a Continental Army brigadier general in the American Revolutionary War. He was mortally bayoneted while rallying his troops at the Battle of Princeton on 3 January 1777 and died of his wounds nine days later. Mercer County, New Jersey, and several American towns are named in his honor.
