• 1776 Battle of Long Island Largest battle of the Revolutionary War ends in British victory British and Hessian forces under General William Howe defeated George Washington's Continental Army in Brooklyn, New York, in the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War. Washington's army narrowly escaped encirclement by withdrawing across the East River to Manhattan at night. The defeat forced the Continental Army into a prolonged retreat through New York and New Jersey.
