• 1773 Phillis Wheatley publishes her first book of poetry Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral appears in London Phillis Wheatley, an enslaved African American poet from Boston, published Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral in London after American publishers declined the work. She became the first person of African descent and first enslaved American to publish a book of poetry. The book challenged contemporary assumptions about the intellectual capacities of Black people.
