• 1741 Appointed Professor at Uppsala Takes chair overseeing medicine, botany, and natural history In 1741 Linnaeus was appointed to a professorship at Uppsala University, initially in medicine and shortly after in botany, natural history, and pharmacy, positions he would hold for the rest of his career. He revitalized the university's botanical garden, reorganizing it according to his own classification system, and drew students from across Europe to his lectures and field excursions. Uppsala became the institutional base from which his taxonomic system spread worldwide.
