1739Stono RebellionEnslaved South Carolinians stage the colony's largest slave uprisingA group of enslaved Africans near the Stono River rose up, killed several slaveholders, and marched toward Spanish Florida seeking freedom. Colonial militia intercepted and crushed the rebellion, killing most of the participants. The revolt led South Carolina to tighten its slave codes severely.
