• 1737 Hooghly River cyclone strikes Calcutta A severe cyclone and storm surge devastate the Bengal coast A powerful cyclone hit the Hooghly estuary and Calcutta, destroying buildings and wrecking many ships at anchor. Contemporary accounts gave very large death tolls, and it is remembered as one of the worst early recorded storms in Bengal.

It was only a modest success at first, but it is now regarded as one of the finest French Baroque operas.
