1732Expedition to LaplandFive-month journey through northern ScandinaviaFunded by the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala, Linnaeus set out in May 1732 on a roughly 2,000-kilometer expedition through Lapland, traveling on foot and by boat to document the region's plants, animals, minerals, and Sami culture. He returned in October with hundreds of new specimens and observations that formed the basis of his 1737 work "Flora Lapponica." The journey established his reputation as a field naturalist and gave him firsthand experience of ecological diversity he would later try to systematize.
