• 1705 Astrakhan Uprising Begins Streltsy and townspeople revolt against Peter the Great's reforms Soldiers and townspeople in the Russian city of Astrakhan rose up against local officials, protesting steep taxes and compulsory Western-style dress and grooming imposed by Tsar Peter the Great. The rebels killed the local governor and seized control of the city. Russian troops suppressed the revolt by the following spring.
