1701Battle of CarpiOpening engagement of the War of the Spanish Succession in ItalyAustrian forces under Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated a French force near Carpi in northern Italy. The victory allowed Eugene to establish a foothold in the Adige valley at the outset of the war. It marked the first significant clash of the War of the Spanish Succession.
1701Battle of RigaCharles XII defeats a Saxon-Russian force crossing the Daugava RiverSwedish forces under King Charles XII crossed the Daugava River near Riga and routed a Saxon army led by the Elector of Saxony during the Great Northern War. The victory secured Swedish control of Livonia for the time being. It was one of Charles XII's early military successes in the war.
