1692Port Royal earthquakeEarthquake and tsunami destroy Jamaica's pirate havenA powerful earthquake struck the English colonial port of Port Royal, Jamaica, triggering a tsunami that submerged much of the town. Contemporary accounts describe the ground liquefying and swallowing buildings and residents, with roughly two-thirds of the town sinking beneath the harbor. The disaster ended Port Royal's status as a major Caribbean trading and pirate haven.
