• 1687 Hungarian Diet makes the Habsburg crown hereditary Diet of Pressburg ends Hungary's elective monarchy and crowns Joseph I The Hungarian Diet meeting at Pressburg renounced the nobility's traditional right to elect their king and to resist royal authority, making the crown of Hungary hereditary in the male line of the House of Habsburg. As part of the settlement, Leopold I's son Joseph was crowned King of Hungary on 9 December. The decree cemented Habsburg control over Hungary following recent victories against the Ottomans.
