1684Massachusetts Bay Colony charter revokedEngland's Court of Chancery annuls colonial self-governmentIn October 1684 the English Court of Chancery ruled the charter of the Massachusetts Bay Colony void, citing the colony's defiance of trade and religious laws. The ruling stripped the Puritan colony of its right to self-government and paved the way for the royal Dominion of New England. The charter was not restored, and Massachusetts was ruled directly by royal governors from 1686.
