1606 – 1684Pierre Corneille (1606-1684)Died 1 October 1684, aged 78Pierre Corneille, the dramatist who established French classical tragedy with plays such as Le Cid, Cinna and Horace, died in Paris on 1 October 1684. His work, built around conflicts of duty and honour, shaped French theatre for generations alongside that of Racine and Moliere. He was elected to the Academie francaise in 1647.
