1654Christina of Sweden abdicates the throneQueen renounces the Swedish throne and converts to CatholicismQueen Christina abdicated the Swedish throne in favor of her cousin Charles X Gustav, ending direct Vasa rule. She left Sweden shortly afterward and publicly converted to Roman Catholicism, eventually settling in Rome. Her abdication and conversion scandalized Protestant Europe.
