1643Solemn League and Covenant SignedEnglish Parliament and Scottish Covenanters ally against the kingIn September 1643 the English Parliament and representatives of the Scottish Covenanters agreed the Solemn League and Covenant, exchanging Scottish military support in the English Civil War for a promise to reform English church governance along Presbyterian lines. Scottish troops subsequently entered the war on the Parliamentarian side. The agreement shaped the religious politics of the conflict for years afterward.
