1633Sentenced to house arrest, forced recantationConfined to his villa in ArcetriOn June 22, 1633, Galileo was formally sentenced, forced to recant his support for heliocentrism, and placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life, first briefly in Siena and then at his villa in Arcetri near Florence. The "Dialogue" was banned and placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, where it would remain for two centuries. Legend holds that he muttered "Eppur si muove" ("And yet it moves") after his recantation, though no contemporary evidence confirms this.
