1632Publishes "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems"Compares the Ptolemaic and Copernican modelsIn February 1632, with papal permission, Galileo published his "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems," presenting the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems through a debate between three fictional characters. Although framed as balanced, the dialogue's unmistakable favoring of heliocentrism, and the placement of the Pope's own arguments in the mouth of a character named Simplicio ("simpleton"), provoked outrage in Rome. The book was quickly withdrawn from sale and triggered formal proceedings against its author.
