1623Publishes "The Assayer"A landmark statement on the scientific methodGalileo's 1623 work "The Assayer" ("Il Saggiatore"), written amid a dispute over the nature of comets, argued that the book of nature "is written in the language of mathematics" and could only be understood through geometric reasoning rather than appeals to authority. Dedicated to the newly elected Pope Urban VIII, an admirer of Galileo, the work was well received and seemed to signal a thaw in his relationship with Rome. It remains one of the clearest early articulations of the modern scientific method.
