Timeline June 1613

Events in June 1613 1

• 1613 The Globe Theatre burns down During a performance of Henry VIII on 29 June 1613, a stage cannon misfires and ignites the thatched roof of the Globe Theatre. The building burns to the ground in under two hours. Remarkably, no one is killed, though one man's breeches catch fire. The Globe is rebuilt on the same site the following year, this time with a tiled roof. Shakespeare does not invest in the rebuilt Globe — he has already effectively retired to Stratford.
