1582Marriage to Anne HathawayAt eighteen, Shakespeare marries Anne Hathaway of Shottery, who is twenty-six and already pregnant. A special licence is obtained to allow the marriage with only one reading of the banns rather than the usual three, indicating some urgency. The couple marry in late November 1582. Their first child, Susanna, is baptised in May 1583. The marriage raises questions scholars have debated for centuries: did Shakespeare choose it freely, or was he compelled?
