• 1536 Pilgrimage of Grace Mass rebellion against Henry VIII's religious reforms sweeps northern England Beginning in Lincolnshire and spreading through Yorkshire, the Pilgrimage of Grace became the largest popular rebellion of Henry VIII's reign, uniting tens of thousands against the dissolution of the monasteries and religious reform. Robert Aske led negotiations with the crown that won a temporary pardon. The king later reneged, and leaders were executed in 1537.
