• 1536 First Suppression Act dissolves lesser monasteries England begins the dissolution of the monasteries The English Parliament passed the Act for the Dissolution of the Lesser Monasteries, authorizing the Crown to seize religious houses with incomes under £200 a year. It marked the first major step in Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, redirecting their wealth and land to the crown. Larger monasteries would follow in subsequent years.
