• 1519 Huldrych Zwingli takes up his post in Zurich A reformist priest begins preaching that will reshape Swiss Christianity On 1 January 1519 Huldrych Zwingli became the people's priest at the Grossmunster church in Zurich, where he began preaching directly from scripture rather than church tradition. His sermons laid the groundwork for the Swiss Reformation, independent in character from Luther's movement in Germany. Zurich would become the first city to formally adopt Protestant reforms under his guidance.
