1450 – 1460Machu PicchuPeru — New WonderA 15th-century Inca citadel built at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains of Peru, probably as an estate for Emperor Pachacuti. Abandoned during the Spanish conquest and unknown to the outside world for centuries, it was brought to international attention by the American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911. Its precisely fitted dry-stone walls and dramatic mountain setting make it one of the most visited archaeological sites on Earth.
