1250 – 1500Moai of Easter IslandRapa Nui (Easter Island) — Honourable MentionNearly 1,000 monolithic stone statues carved by the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The largest erected moai stands 33 feet tall and weighs 82 tonnes. They were carved from volcanic tuff at the Rano Raraku quarry and transported to platforms around the island's coastline. How the Rapa Nui moved them remains a subject of fascination — recent experiments suggest they were 'walked' upright using ropes.
