1205Battle of Adrianople -- Baldwin captured by BulgarsEmperor Baldwin I is defeated and captured by the Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan at the Battle of Adrianople (14 April 1205) -- less than a year after the Latin Empire's establishment. Baldwin dies in Bulgarian captivity (probably murdered). The defeat demonstrates the Latin Empire's fundamental weakness: it controls Constantinople and some coastal territory but cannot project power into the Balkan interior. The Bulgarian and Greek threats prevent consolidation. The Latin Empire's tenure is a demonstration that military conquest is insufficient to maintain an empire without legitimacy, administrative capacity and local support.
