• 1183 Saladin captures Aleppo Key Syrian stronghold falls to the Ayyubid leader Saladin took control of Aleppo from its Zengid ruler after a negotiated surrender, a major step in unifying Muslim Syria and Egypt under his rule. The conquest removed one of the last major rivals to his authority in the region. It positioned him to turn his full strength against the Crusader states in the years that followed.
