He was himself killed by the forces of Malcolm III, Duncan's son, at the Battle of Lumphanan, and his story later inspired Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth.

Macbeth's stepson Lulach succeeded him as King of Scots, though Malcolm would depose Lulach the following year to take the throne himself.
