1016Battle of AshingdonCnut crushes Edmund Ironside in the decisive battle of the English conquestCnut's Danish army defeated Edmund Ironside's English forces at Ashingdon in Essex, a victory aided by the battlefield desertion of the English noble Eadric Streona. The defeat forced Edmund to negotiate a partition of England with Cnut. It marked the effective end of organized English resistance to the Danish conquest.
